small, roundish, partly clumping, with dainty tubercles, crown with bright wool
to 20 spines, radial, bright
flowers appears on a longish areole, small, purple, pink or white, ovary bare
seeds dull black

Distribution

north-east Mexico to central Mexico - Zacatecas to Hidalgo
very warm steppes

Growth period

bright and warm, not in full sun, somewhat half shady
somewhat sensitive against moisture therefore only seldom watering

Winter period

dry and bright at 8–10°C (46–50°F)
to constitute flowers requires the early blooming plants in late winter
and early springtime somewhat more of moisture

Substrat

minerally and permeable for water with some of loam

Description

like beet root thickened roots
body with narrow base, otherwise clavate, 3.5–4 cm (1.3–1.5 in) Ø
20–25 radial spines, 3–6 mm long, glassy white with dark tip, acicular,
outspread, sometimes with some additional, bristles like, to 2 cm (0.7 in) long spines

(1–) 2 central spines, the upper ± 1.6 cm (0.6 in), ascending, the lower 1–1.5 cm (0.4–0.6 in) long,
distant, glassy white, with dark tip
flowers funnel shaped, yellowish to brownish, with reddish midvein
