hedgehog tubercles cactus, because of the spiny tubercles on the plant body
ovate to cylindric; ribs seperated in tubercles bumps, behind the spines with a furrow-shaped oblong areole
flowers short, stocky, bell shaped
fruit very dry, jointed
seeds with a fine grid and bumps, black

USA - in the southwest
Mexiko - in the north
warm arid areas

Growth period

full sun to half shade but very warm location,
sensitive to moisture, root neck keep dry
always careful and sparse watering,
plants are also during the summer sensitive against cool moisture

Winter period

light and dry at 5–10°C (41–50°F)

Substrat

gravelly, pure mineral and very permeable to water
addition of pumice, lava, gravel and expanded shale

Description

ovate, 7–11 cm (2.7–4.3 in) long, 5–7 cm (2–2.7 in) Ø, blue-green
13–21 ribs
areoles 0.9 cm (0.35 in) distant, elliptically
spines hidden dense the body, dull yellow-brown

12–14 radial spines, slight curved, spreaded
4 central spine, calcareous-gray or partly with brown tip,
the longer one are erect to above, 1.2–2.5 cm (0.4–1 in) long
flowers about 2.5 cm (1 in) long and Ø, petal pink, sepal white to pink,
midvein green, the longest are lanceolate
fruits green, when ripe are brownish
seeds black
