flowers appear near the crown, mid-size to small-size, white, violet or red tinted, also striped,
appear in early spring; fruits are dry, with few seeds
new taxanomy uses the name of the genus Stenocactus (K. Schumann) A. Berger (1929)

radial spines white, 2 are stronger, somewhat erect, 2 are aslant downward,
those are finer as the upper, only half of lenght
1 upper spine, to 3 cm (1.2 in) long, oblate, inside curved, lengthwise furrowed, diagonally furrowed, with brown tip
1 central spine, to 4 cm (1.5 in) long, light, with dark tip
flowers to 4 cm (1.5 in) long, red, inside carmine
