up to 7 m (23 ft) tall, shoots about 12 cm (4.7 in) thick, light blue-green, later gray-green
ribes 4–7, flat
areoles short, white tomentose
5 radial spines light horn colored to black; 1 center spine stronger, longer, darker

flowers to 25 cm (9.8 in) long, white
fruits plum size, fruit flesh red
