Starfish plant, because of the shape of the plant body
flat, spherical or columnar, with tiny, differently arranged,
white flakes for receiving and keeping of humidity

ribs 4–9, strong spines in A. ornatum, bristles at the capricorne-group,
otherwise spineless, yellow or yellow flowers with red throat; hat-shaped seeds, light or dark brown

Description

globular, later extended, gray-green
ribs mostly 5 or more, often less, sharply angular, with deep longitudinal furrows
dense white-gray flocked
areoles 1–1,5 cm (0.4–0.6 in) distant, globular

flowers up to 6 cm (2.4 in) long, yellow, silky shiny, opening to the sun, the evening closing
serrated petals; sepals tipped, black 7 stigma, yellow
green fruits, covered with scales, star-shaped opening
seeds about 0,3 cm (0.1 in) long, hats-shaped, light to dark brown
